Area Information
Scottsdale
Scottsdale prides itself as the “West’s Most Western Town.” That means boardwalks, horse ranches, beautiful desert vistas, and a laid-back friendly attitude. Yet Scottsdale also means gourmet food, world-class resorts, art galleries, music, theater, pro sports, championship golf courses and one of the highest standards of living in the nation.
The city has become a financial center and home to important medical facilities, such as Scottsdale Memorial Hospital and the Mayo Clinic. The Scottsdale Air Park in north Scottsdale continues to attract light industry, adding to the city’s job base.
For a quick taste of Scottsdale, visit the Old Town of Fifth Avenue shopping districts at Scottsdale Road, between Camelback Road and Second Avenue. For serious shoppers, there’s the Scottsdale Fashion Square at Scottsdale Rd. and Camelback, anchored by Nieman Marcus, Dillard's and Nordstrom. The downtown city mall and Civic Center also offer relaxing greenery and paths, contemporary sculptures, and easy access to the Scottsdale Center for the Arts, with its exhibits and theater. Nearby Scottsdale stadium is the spring training home of the San Francisco Giants.
Carefree
In 1958, K.T. Palmer and Tom Darlington decided they did not like the way Scottsdale was growing, so they decided to build their own town complete with zoning, underground utilities, and unique street names - this was the beginning of Carefree.
Today Carefree boasts of the beauty of the high Sonoran desert, abundant wildlife, and the peace and quiet associated with a small community. The town center features a large sundial (claimed to be the largest in the world) and small shops surrounding it. The recently re-opened Carefree Inn offers excellent facilities for visitors, including Minerva’s Restaurant and a Tennis and Biking Center.
Phoenix
The eyes of the nation have definitely turned toward Phoenix, very rapidly expanding toward the position of the fifth largest city in the nation. Phoenix, already Arizona's capital city as well as the seat of government for Maricopa County, has assumed a whole new global identity in recent years as "The Place" to live, work, and play in the Southwest.
The rich, colorful history of this flourishing metropolis has its roots in 300 A.D. when the agricultural Hohokam Indians first settled the region. True to the mythical heritage of its name, modern Phoenix "rose from the ashes" of the Hohokam ruins and their ancient canal system. With the advent of refrigerated air-conditioning, Phoenix grew in appeal as a retirement or winter vacation haven. Summer comfort could now blend with swaying palm trees, endless sunshine, crystalline lakes, and a Sonoran desert beauty to attract increasing numbers of year-round residents. From sports to fine arts, newcomers of all ages and interests will discover many rich treasures in the Phoenix metropolitan area.
